Opening Game at Constellation Field

James Larkin Smith of TheMorningCoffeeMix - KFEE-DB(Digital Radio), did a great review of the Sugar Land Skeeters new stadium Constellation Field.

Here's an excerpt of the post:

"As for the stadium, the field is in excellent shape. What get’s your attention at first is the large Texas sized video screen in center field. In your field box seats, the sight lines are unbelievable. For Houston area fans used to seeing the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, you will feel like you are on the field."

Drew Locke on Jimmy Van Ostrand Signing

Here's what Skeeters outfielder Drew Locke, had to say about his friend and newest Skeeter, Jimmy Van Ostrand.

"Jimmy's a great addition to the Skeeters both on the field and off. He will definitely help out in the middle of the order and play a quality 3rd base for us."

Skeeters Add Three More To Roster

The Sugar Land Skeeters announced that they have signed first baseman Jimmy Van Ostrand, and pitchers Michael Nix and Willy Startup for the 2012 season.

Jimmy Van Ostrand was a 8th round (249th overall) selection by the Houston Astros in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft out of Cal Poly. He played all  six of professional seasons in the Astros organization. He is a career .277 hitter with 51 home runs and 304 RBI. Last season, he hit .306 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI for the Astros Double-A affiliate Corpus Christi.

Michael Nix will be entering his fourth season in the Atlantic League. He previously played for the Newark Bears in 2009 and 2010, and the York Revolution in 2010 and 2011.  Last season, Nix notched 18 saves for York. Nix was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round (347th overall) of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft out of Auburn University. He played four seasons in the Braves organization, including 11 games at the Triple-A level in 2008. In 2009, he signed with the Colorado Rockies organization, and pitched six games for the Double-A affiliate Tulsa before being released. He signed with the Newark Bears later that season, and has been the Atlantic League since. He has an 8-4 record with a 3.19 ERA in his Atlantic League career.

Willy Startup was a 5th round (167th overall) selection by the Atlanta Braves in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Georgia. He's played in the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and Baltimore Orioles organizations. He's pitched 117 innings at the Triple-A level. Startup has a career 23-6 record with a 2.66 in 291 innings pitched. Last season, he split time between three different levels in the Orioles organization.

The Skeeters continue to put together an impressive roster. Van Ostrand is a power hitter who can drive in runs and will be a solid addition to the lineup. While Michael Nix will probably start the season as their closer. Willy Startup will mostly likely be the left handed specialist out of the bullpen. Three great signings!
